KJHV Berlin Project: Designing a Peaceful Sanctuary for Youth & Families

Discover how KJHV Berlin used BuzziSpace acoustic solutions to create a soothing, calm sanctuary for underprivileged children and families.

When the Kinder- und Jugendhilfe-Verbund (KJHV) set out to design its facility in Berlin, Germany, the mission went far beyond standard architecture. As an organization dedicated to supporting underprivileged children, young adults, and families, the space needed to feel safe, comforting, and home-like. In this sanctuary, youth could open up, learn, and heal.

To soften noise levels and prevent overwhelming echo without making the facility look sterile or institutional, KJHV integrated BuzziSpace acoustic lighting, warm upholstered seating, and sound-absorbing wall treatments.

The Challenge: Reducing Sensory Overload in High-Activity Spaces

Children and teenagers thrive in vibrant, energetic environments, but noise buildup can quickly lead to sensory overload, anxiety, and stress—especially for youth coming from difficult backgrounds.

  • The Problem: Bare walls, large group activity areas, and hard flooring created loud reverberation, making private counseling and quiet conversations difficult.

  • The Objective: Tame sound reflections and lower ambient noise while keeping the interior colorful, tactile, and deeply welcoming.

The Solution: A Warm, Trauma-Informed Acoustic Approach

1. Soft Visual Texture & Noise Capture

High-ceiling activity rooms and communal meeting spaces feature wall-mounted acoustic panels, such as BuzziTile.

  • Tactile Warmth: Adds soft, welcoming texture and visual comfort while replacing cold, reflective wall surfaces.

  • Sound Control: Captures direct speech reflections and perimeter noise, preventing sound from bouncing across the room and keeping the overall environment calm and digestible.

2. Protective Micro-Nooks with Soft Upholstered Seating

For children seeking a moment of quiet or young people engaging in one-on-one sessions with counselors, high-back acoustic seating offers a sense of security.

  • Sense of Haven: Upholstered high-back booths create tactile "hugs" that visually and acoustically cushion children from surrounding activity.

  • Emotional Privacy: Enables sensitive discussions to happen comfortably without requiring formal, intimidating counseling rooms.

3. Tactile Wall Treatments for Echo Reduction

Strategic wall-mounted acoustic panels were introduced across therapy rooms, corridors, and play zones.

  • Echo Dampening: Absorbs harsh sound reflections from active play and group chatter.

  • Warm Aesthetics: Replaces cold plaster walls with soft felt fabrics and welcoming colors, enhancing the feeling of a residential home.

The Result: A Calming, Human-Centric Haven

By prioritizing acoustic comfort, KJHV Berlin created a space that honors the emotional needs of the children and families it serves. The facility balances vibrant community interaction with quiet, peaceful corners, proving that thoughtful acoustic design plays a vital role in human well-being.
